At the start of this year's CSCLeaders programme, Sir Alan
Parker, Chairman, Brunswick Group and Chairman, HRH The Duke of
Edinburgh's Commonwealth Study Conferences (UK Fund), welcomed
participants and introduced them to the Challenge they will be
exploring. As part of his welcome he quoted HRH Duke of Edinburgh's
words from the maiden Commonwealth Study Conference in
"In fact, the whole success of the Conference depends, not
on what you decide, but on what you talk about, and the opinions,
however provocative, which are aired. The Conference will have
achieved its object if each one of you goes home that much more
aware of what industry does to people and with perhaps a feeling
that you are better equipped, when and if your turn comes, to
smooth out the difficulties of industrialisation.
"May I emphasise that you are not here to be taught anything
and that the reports of the groups are in no way an examination.
You have been asked because of your particular experience which
together covers a very wide scope, to examine the subject of human
problems in industrial communities in the Commonwealth. Each one of
you will take away the results of that examination in your own
minds, and from then on every professional decision which you have
to make will be coloured to some extent by what you discovered here
and in this company.
"The extent to which your subsequent practice is influenced
by this Conference will be the true measure of the success of our
efforts here. In the end, the art, the science and knowledge of
management, administration and negotiation must be contained in
those people's minds whose day to day decisions have a profound
effect upon industry and therefore on the whole course of human
